The 14kWh Battery Rebate Tier Explained (Post-May 2026 Rules)

Since 1 May 2026, battery rebate support in Australia is tiered by size. Understanding the tiers is the difference between a well-priced system and paying for capacity the rebate barely supports.

The three tiers

Capacity bandSupport levelWhat it means
0 – 14 kWh100%Full rebate rate on every kWh
14 – 28 kWh60%Reduced rate on this portion
Above 28 kWhMinimalLittle to no support on this portion

Why mid-sized batteries win in 2026

A 10–14kWh battery gets every kilowatt-hour supported at the full rate, covers the evening peak for most Sydney households, and hits the best cost-per-kWh after rebates. Doubling capacity does not double the rebate.

When a bigger battery still makes sense

In those cases, ask installers to quote both a 14kWh option and your larger option with the rebate itemised on each — the comparison usually decides it. Start with the rebate calculator.
